Our Home Town: McALESTER, OKLAHOMA  Newcomers are always amazed at the many outstanding restaurants located in the McAlester area. Springtime brings the Home and Garden How: Southeastern Oklahoma’s largest trade show event. Thousands of visitors come out to see the latest in gardening equipment and home improvement options. In the fall, citizens gather to celebrate the state’s heritage during Oklahoma Heritage Week. The McAlester Heritage Day Luncheon highlights a portion of McAlester’s colorful history and heritage. The Oklahoma State Penitentiary has made its mark on McAlester’s history. Completed in 1912, the prison is the site of the annual Oklahoma Prison Rodeo, the world’s only “behind the walls” prison rodeo, which draws thousands of visitors to McAlester each Labor Day Weekend. McAlester is located at the crossroads of US Highway 69 north and south and US Highway 270 east and west. The Indian Nation Turnpike also serves the area and Interstate 40 is 40 miles or so to the north. McAlester and the surrounding area have become the regional center for commerce, retail trade, culture, recreation and heritage in Southeastern Oklahoma. Natural resources are plentiful in and around McAlester offering energy for the future and outdoor recreational opportunities for the present. Located 90 miles south of Tulsa and 120 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, McAlester is one of the state’s oldest communities. The area has a diversified economy with a range of manufacturing business, excellent schools, and a positive business atmosphere supported by aggressive community leaders. The economic base in the region is composed of McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma State Penitentiary, its retail and wholesale trade, manufacturing, medical services, the travel and recreation industry, agriculture and ranching and oil and gas development. A wide variety of shopping, dining, recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities are offered for area and regional residents. The unique historical heritage of the area has become the basis for the strength of McAlester and its people. McAlester grew around a trading post established in 1870 in the old Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory. Abundant coal deposits discovered about this time brought an influx of immigrants of many nationalities to work the deep mines. Italian immigrants comprised the largest percentage to locate in the area. The miners and their families provided a legacy of Italian cuisine and customs that are unique to the area. After the discovery of coal in the area and the construction of the north-south railroad, McAlester, named after J.J. McAlester, was well on its way to becoming the hub of the industry and commerce for the area. The construction of a second railroad, running east-west, firmly established McAlester as the place for industry and manufacturing in the area.
